Updated: Jul 16, 2020

Four Minneapolis police officers have been charged over the killing of George Floyd, which caused outrage all across the world.

The officers arrested Mr. Floyd for a fake $20 bill. Following the arrest, Derek Chauvin, one of the police officers who arrived on the scene, was filmed pressing his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes before he died.

Authorities in Minneapolis have released personal details about the four officers involved. Here is what we know so far.

Derek Chauvin

What was his role?

Chauvin, 44, was filmed kneeling on the neck of Mr. Floyd, who was handcuffed on the floor and crying out saying "I can't breathe."

What are his charges?

Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder. He was originally charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

What is his background?

Out of the four officers, Chauvin had been a police officer the longest, serving for almost 19 years with the Minneapolis Police Department.

Chauvin's record included at least 15 conduct complaints. One complaint was from a woman who was pulled over by Chauvin in 2007. The woman claimed that he pulled her out of the car and frisked her after she was caught going 10mph over the speed limit. Reports show that Chauvin did not record audio of the incident and failed to turn on his dashcam during the stop.

Before he became a police officer, Chauvin served in the U.S. Army two times and had also worked as a security guard and an employee at McDonald's.

Tou Thao

What was his role?

Thao, 33, stood near the other three officers as they restrained Floyd. He stood between the bystanders and the officers, telling them to stay back.

What are his charges?

Thao was charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder as well as aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

What is his background?

He had six previous conduct complaints against him. In 2017, a lawsuit against Thao and another officer accused them of using excessive force. They beat up and broke the teeth of a man who was said to be the subject of an arrest warrant.

J. Alexander Kueng

What was his role?

Kueng was one of the first two officers on the scene. He helped Chauvin and Lane pin Floyd to the ground.

What are his charges?

Kueng has been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

What is his background?

He was relatively new to policing, as it was only his third shift. Kueng had no previous complaints during his time as a police officer.

Thomas Lane

What was his role?

Lane, 37, was one of the first two officers on the scene. He approached Floyd's car and pointed his gun at him before he handcuffed him. Later on, he helped Chauvin and Kueng restrain Floyd.

What are his charges?

He has been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

What is his background?

Just like Kueng, Lane was a trainee and was only on his fourth day on the job when the incident happened.

During the arrest, Lane had questioned Chauvin's tactics, suggesting that he should roll him on his side, rather than keeping his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck.
